I did it. After many years of knowing that our 25s have a weak point at the bow fitting I installed a brace that should improve the situation. Thanks to the Forum member sharing what happened to the bow of his boat when the forestay took a big hit I finished my installion. I got the idea from an article in Mainsheet many years ago in the 22's section and this is how the project finished:
Hi Jim, that looks very stout. I just got the upgrade from CD with the two more holes in the chainplate and anchor roller. It will be on the boat by tonight. Cheers.
Dennis--I have been looking at my 1979 FK SR and it appears that the rub rail will have to come off to access the bolts on the bow. Is this a common problem, or do I have an unusual boat?
Al, I saw Jim B's installation and the rub rail was cut to allow for the upgrade. I saw on mine that I would have had to cut it or drill a large hole to get the front bolt out to remove the original.
Sweet craft, that is an interesting solution. One of the first mods I did to my 82 was the new CD bow stem/anchor roller. Yes the rub rail is a small issue, I dremeled a half moon and got the bolt out with no problem. Some people go to much more effort. I had no problem installing it, it does need a little bending. I believe anyone on this forum would be just as successfull.
Frank, once again, your solution is poetic. I just got back from the boat. My daughter and I just replaced four life line stantions and the next project was the new bow fitting with the anchor roller. I took a long look at the fact that I had to take the entire rubrail off and gave up. I just don't have the funds in the kitty for that. But now I see the way you handled it and my daughter is packing the tools in the car as I type this. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Frank, yes I drilled a hole in the anchor locker and sealed it with 3M 5200 and we shall look for any leak. The whole unit I installed is SS except for the Al top pieces and the thru bolt. I can still check for tension with the u bolt under the locker. Your installation sure looks good and very practical with the bow roller.
Frank, do you like the anchor roller? Do you use it? What anchor do you have on it? I've been seriously thinking about installing just that upgrade. I think it looks great.
Jim, stay on top of that hole in the anchor locker. A very common leak is from the anchor locker drain into the area under the V-berth. It is usually contained there and not a super big deal but it is a hassle.
Dan, I almost never use my anchor, I have the danforth that came with the boat, we sail in a mud bottom lake. For me the advantage to the roller is it kinda squeegies the line as you haul it in, it holds the line at the bow and away from the rub rail, and it allows me to stand more erect on the foredeck while raising the anchor as opposed to bending over the side.
Thanx for the pictures and the explanations gentlemen . I could see that my PO had done a modification on the bow, its reassuring now to know it was done to proper specs.
