I know that the early model 250's had the cable system which should be upgraded to the push/pull. Did the factory ever start using the push/pull or is it still standard with the cable system?
Jim, Yes, the early 250s have a 1-cable push/pull steering. The newer ones have a 2-cable pull/pull steering. Here's a link to a similar topic this week --> Edson System Adjustment The link has pictures of the newer steering. Catalina and Edson changed to a pull/pull two cable system about 2000. The single cable push/pull is either no longer available or it wouldn't be wanted any way. The original system suffered excess play, drag, a poor steering ratio and failures.
The upgrade does ok with the 3rd generation rudder but the 2nd generation rudder definately needs a better wheel/rudder ratio for more leverage. The upgraded system has had some minor problems under heavy load conditions and when not lubed regularly.
There has been quite a bit of chatter about the steering system on the forum and some searching should produce a good bit of perspective. I've also written about it and that is available on my web site, link below.
After looking at the Edson upgrade and being less than thrilled, I produced a design that in my opinion is better than Edson's. I was asked to kit it and have done so for the last couple of years, so it is an option.
The name doesn't sound familiar. Could be that they built the conversion themselves. AYC as in Austin Yacht Club? I've shipped several kits to Austin, could it be that the boat has changed hands?
I know that Steve Steakly sold his and upgraded to a C28 or C30 but I think his boat went out of town.
You didn't perchance buy Mark Melchoir's boat? Last time I talked to him he hadn't been sailing much, with a boy very much involved with baseball I think and I've wondered if he will hold onto or let the boat go.
Our baseball season is coming to a close here, my wife's son coaches high school baseball and we lost in the first playoff round. There are two other teams we are following close however.
