Ok, so we lost the end of the jib halyard up the mast while raising the mast. First lesson, put a figure of 8 on the end of the halyards to stop the ends passing through their mast slots.
And how did we recover it... at the staging area ...?
It was easy! With the mast in the trailering position, I pulled the halyard out of the top of the mast. Then ran the backstay inside the mast from the masthead. We captured it as it passsed by the mast slot with a piece of wire acting as a hook. Then tied a leader line to the bight of the backstay wire and pulled the stay back out at the mast head pulling the leader line with it. Tied the end of the leaderline to the jib halyard and used that to pull the halyard back down inside the mast and out of the mast slot.
Once we figured it out, it only took maybe 5mins to take care of it.
Take care to ensure that the haylard is fed over the wheel in the mast head before tying it to the leader line.

At least it was while you were raising the mast and not a few miles out during a headsail change!
FWIW, if you ever "lose" the jib halyard and can't lower the mast, the Mast Mate web ladder is an easy way to climb to the top and retrieve it. It's cheaper than a bosun's chair and you can do it solo.
