Don't apologize... Lines are made of rope. I wrap some masking tape around the rope, cut in the middle of the tape, and then zap it with a butane lighter and remove the tape. Presto--a line!

I will generally whip the line before I cut it with a sharp knife. I burn the ends with a multi-purpose butane torch tool that I keep on board for soldering, melting shrink tube,...etc.
