I'm in the market for a diesel to pull a 14000 GVWR 5th wheel. Going with an '07 Chevy Duramax with the allison 6 speed trans...650 ft/lbs of torque. One of the biggest advantages of the diesel is (when towing real heavy) it will double the gas mileage of a big gasser.
I used a '91 2WD F350 DRW w/460 and E4OD, 4.11 rear end carrying a 1200 lb popup camper to La Paz and back. My mileage varied more with the weight of my foot than the weight of the rig. We ranged from around 6mpg with heavy foot to around 11 with an egg underfoot.
It's abysmal mileage, I know, but my truck cost me about 1/10 the price of a new diesel, and my math indicated with $3 gas and about %50 greater mileage with the diesel, I'd have to drive around 200K miles with the whole rig to recoup the higher new vehicle costs. And besides, I don't care if I scratch this truck.
