I don't know proper name for them, but the deck plates that the shrouds attach to on my boat have some rust on them, even with the boat being only 5 months old. It appears that there is a manufacturing defect in the stainless, as both have a small dot of rust in exactly the same spot. Here is a picture:

What should I do to prevent this from getting any worse? How would you remove the rust without damaging the plate any further?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here are a couple of threads that might give you some insight into the chainplate rust problem and solutions. I had your same problems within two months of getting my new boat. It took time and continueous cleaning to get it all off, but it has yet to reappear. I think it has to do with the steel machines use to make the components and the not too quality controlled cleaning process leaving small amounts of iron residue on the stainless parts.

Thanks Frog. I have not been out to the boat in about 3 weeks (weekend monsoons), so I don't know if other things have started rusting, but I will try the solutions in the two threads, very helpful.

Did you ever talk to Catalina about it?

BTW, I did my commissioning myself, and I can verify that no abrasives pads etc. were used on my boat either...

I did talk to Frank about this issue and his conclusion was the same as others noted on the threads and that of my own. That is the manufacture's cleaning process may not have been accomplished properly, thus leaving some iron residue on the stainless. He was going to get with them about the complaints. Apparently something changed since you are the first to complain about the problem since I talked with him. That would be 138 boats between this problem raising its head again.
