Suggested change/alternate to original design companion step extention: For those considering to make the companionway step extension you may want to consider the following:
Amendment # One Measure the distance between all treads. If the distance between the ballast tank step and the second step is lower that the others, add wood strips below the step. You’ll be able to obtain maximum lenght of the step if the spacing up/down can be increased. You’ll need to obtain longer SS bolts. That’s all!
Alternate #One For those handy with a hacksaw and mitre box you may wish make an anodised aluminium frame for the legs instead of wood. The material is (stock) & available at Home Depot. You need a 4ft long by 3/4” x 3/4” square alum tubing, cost $9.95 Can. funds. Measure and cut the corners of the leg frame, except the outside wall, 90 degrees. Before folding the frame closed, make a square wood dowel and jam tight fit this into one end of the 90 degrees cuts, and fold closed. You will have to drill small holes in the end unit and fasten with a small wood SS screw to hold the end pieces of the frame together. This (open) corner should be installed up and next to the hinge. Hinge the unit the same way as the wood frame unit. Round file the corners a bit. This is easy to do and will look good. Use SS fasteners/hinges since it will be exposed to weather and salt. Add a glue-on felt strip to the bottom to prevent straching the ballast valve compartment step. (welded corners of the frame is an alternative)

Let' face it... this is the best win/win improvement you'll ever undertake... and what's even more... it's an easy project plus you get to work on the boat and can stretch it as long as you want and have her blessing while you're doing it!!
You'll absolutely love the result and so will your wife/partner/significant other too!!
