I've found it helpful, not only for shorthanded sailing but for easing the load on arms & shoulders. It's simple to install (remember to stuff a rag just below assembly so as to catch any parts you may drop down the pedestal) and a worthy upgrade, though costwise Edson will soak you badly.
I had one installed when the steering system was installed and use it all the time. It is handy when going forward, holding the rudder off to the side when at anchor and swimming, and most importantly when eating while sailing.
Hey Paul , If it is squeaking , try spraying it with car brake cleaner . stuff a rag in there so it doesnt drip inthe bearth . And try not to wash the grease off the chain . If it still sqeaks , take it apart and scuff the pads with sand paper and spray again . or you might find you need a new pad. Works on a car when they glaze over from use.
I think of it as a must have. As above I also use it when just anchored or floating to keep rudder from moving side-to-side. When sailing it cuts down on overcompensating rudder movement.
