I´m using a roller furling in my Capri 25 hull 166. I have noted that others boat without roller furling have more pointing capacity. Do you have some experience with roller furling, or what is your opinion.
Yes the boats with out a Furler will be able to point higher than you because the foot of the sail is cut higher to allow space for the drum. This is about 1'-8" off of the forstay to the tack of the sail. At the clew end of the sail it will be about 2'-4" off of the deck. If the sail is cut like this the higher foot will make the boat heal over more do to the air comming under the sail. I too had a furler on our Capri 25 Hull #17. With the amount of heal you have to sail more off the wind to keep the boat flat. I took the drum and halyard swivle off of the Furler and am now using the correct size sails. There are other things that could be wrong also, Sheet angle to the tack and genoa car. The correct draft in the sail (about 35 to 40% back from the luff. your shrouds could be too tight for the wind conditions. It also can be halyard tension in both the Main and Genoa, you could be sheeting in the genoa too much causing the main to backwind. Wind conditions could be higher than the head sail cut for the furler, Not enough backstay on, Not the correct prebend in the mast, Not enough rake in the mast. ECT,ECT
What kind of Furler do you have on the boat? What is the size of the Genoa % Where are the sheeting cars on the track? What track are you sheeting to?
