Crane-out is tomorrow, amigos. This afternoon my son and I folded sails, cleaned the cabin, coiled lines and pumped out the freshwater tank. Halfway through these chores a great cloud blew in from the north, carrying snow. You could hear it hitting the decks. Up and down B-dock, boats bereft of crew danced on their lines like lovely widows.

Two years ago we were wondering whether it would be wise to spend money on a cruising sailboat.

It was.

Actually I suspect there are parts of Alaska where the cruising season is longer than ours here in Northern Minnesota; Leech Lake is a fairly quiet big water (roughly 20 miles by 20 miles) 4 hours north of Minneapolis with a mostly wild overfoliated shoreline and perhaps 60 sailboats slipped in four or five small marinas. Paradise! But only for five months a year.

My sail season has been extended. I just returned to Reno today after spending 10 very interesting days crewing on a 48 ft Tayana from San Francisco to San Diego. Just enough time to pull the boat out of Lake Tahoe for the winter and head back to San Diego to rejoin the Tayana owners for the start of the Baja Ha-Ha on Oct 31. For thoes of you not on the West coast this is an annual event with about 140 sail boats going from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas Mexico. The trip should take about 10 days including two stops for beach parties. Should we run into cold weather, we expect to use tequila for anti freeze.
