After being away from the boat (250 wk)for several weeks, I returned to the marina (saltwater moorage) and to an unusual odor in the boat. Upon investigation discovered about an inch of standing water in the stern compartment behind the aft bunk area - the compartment where my batteries are mounted. The water apprarently at some point had worked its way under one of the bunk cushions. The connections to the holding tank appeared sound and dry. I've had the boat since 2002 new and have not experienced standing water in the battery compartment. Is this unusual or is it something to be expected? Where might the water be coming from....possibly condensation from the holding tank? (wishful thinking!).
Also returned to find the toilet bowl full to the top with water (no indication of overflow however) Where would THAT come from? Would the valve to the water outside the boat allow outside water to simply seep or flow in without actuating the head pump mechanism?
Is your holding tank in the stern compartment? Is it full? I don't have a holding tank and never had any water back there either. I would bet the full toilet and holding tank have something to do with your water problem. Just how? is the question.
It'sad to say but water in the aft compartment (by the battery and holding tank is common). Have someone shine a light around the coaming areas while you are looking around in the aft compartment to see if you see any light. Some have found gaps there and have sealed it with plumbers putty. Oscar has a fix that does'nt stop the water but stops is from collecting. Here is the link that talks about it.
Notice Oscar's disclaimer at the bottom. I looked at that idea for my 250wk and it didn't look like I could drill that hole and reach the bilge. Maybe it was just too close to the hull for my comfort. . .
I think Oscar also suggested removing the bulkhead and crawling back there with a flashlight. Dry everything and then check around while someone topside shoots water at the combing pockets. Some have been known to leak.
I have the porta-potty option so can't help with the plumbing issues except to say they might not be related to the water in the stern.
Greg....I read with interest the solution of putting drain holes near the batteries. My hull under the access panel located under the aft cushion beneath the cabin stairs is where the through-hull electronic instrument sensors are located. Would the water drain to this location and cause a problem???
