Rudder
Modification - Forward Rake
Submitted by Arlyn Stewart
The rudder torque on my C250 has been excessive. Several
email inquires to Catalina brought no response to this problem. A couple of us old Hobie
sailors knew the technique of raking the rudder forward could reduce helm effort and when
I discovered some McGregor owners have been doing this with success, it was decided worth
a try. One way to do this is by removing a little stock from the rudder frame. This moves
the rudders leading edge in the middle area, from two inches aft of the pintle center line
to one inch ahead, a net gain of three inches. This mod can be done without compromising
the rudder or rudder head.
