Rudder Replacement
by Maurice D. Howland
Recently I purchased a used 1995 Catalina 250WB with a kick-up rudder. After
owning a MacGregor 26, my wife and I were expecting spectacular performance
from our new Catalina. Much to our horror, we had bought "The Boat Who
Wouldn't Sail." Thanks to the Catalina 25/250 National Association (Sailor's
Forum) web site, we were able to ascertain that we might be a little short in
the rudder department. A call to Catalina Customer Support confirmed our
suspicion. We returned the upper portion of our rudder to the Catalina Parts
Department. The aluminum head was modified to accept a new fiberglass rudder
and shipped back. As a second owner, I was obligated to pay the shipping
only.
Therefore, if you own a Catalina 250 with a kick-up rudder measuring 48" from
the pivot point to the bottom (see photograph) and your boat has a tendency to
"roundup" when sailing to wind, call your Catalina Dealer.
