Anchor Roller

We have talked many times about adding an
anchor roller to the C25. I decided to do that this Spring so I could have
different kinds of anchors aboard.
Parts:
- Bow Roller from Creative Marine Products -
$60 + $8 UPS shipping http://www.paw.com/sail/creative/catalog/index.html
This anchor roller is 3/16th polished SS and has 4 3/8" bolt holes (Windline
has 3)
- Simpson-Lawrence 16.5lb. Claw anchor from
JSI (Sailnet on-line store) $57, at that time there was free shipping and
they don't charge sales tax.
- (4) 1 3/4" x 3/8" SS bolts, nylon
lock nuts and flat washers
I took some time to position the anchor on the
roller, on the boat to get proper clearance. Once done, I marked the holes and
drilled with a bit 1/32" larger than 3/8" so as to ease mounting a
bit. I used Boatlife to bed the roller and snugged it down tight.
The anchor locker hatch was notched with a 1
3/4" holesaw, back far enough so the chain will clear the lip. I squared
up the notch with a hacksaw with very fine teeth. In order to strengthen the
hatch, I wiped down the underside with acetone and added a layer of glass
cloth and polyester resin. I suppose you could use West System just as
well. This added strength to an already flexible hatch. Although you
can't really tell, I also painted the non-skid on the hatch with Interlux
Brightside Polyurethane, w/flattening agent added. It now matches the rest of
the non-skid. (Be cautious with this...the Interlux color chips seem to have
little to do with the actual color of the paint). The SS hardware on the hatch
was an odd combination of things, so it was replaced with proper sized
flathead SS screws and locknuts. I also replaced the hatch tape.
Rode is now 30' of heavy 1/4" chain and
150' of 3/8" 3-strand. I also added a 3/8" SS eyebolt in the anchor
locker pan to tie the bitter end to. If you drill through the forward part of
the pan, it will exit into the small locker forward of the v-berth. The flat
washers were bedded with Boatlife caulk as well.
The anchor roller is more universal than a
BRM2, so you could use a plowor Danforth style anchor on it if you choose.
Good anchoring!!
