Locker
Vents and Courtesy Lighting

I installed polished stainless vents in each locker as
well as the v-berth to help with the dampness and musty smell.
Parts needed: Perko polished SS vents- four size small @
$2.00; one size large @ $3.80; mounting hardware- four #6 SS screws (I used
small machine screws and locknuts, you could also us self-tapping, but that
will leave a sharp point inside the locker).
I measured down from the teak trim, rather than up from
the irregular cabin sole. Holes for the vents were made with a holesaw,
although it could be done with a Dremmel if you are good with the tool. I
drilled the screw holes and mounted them without sealer. The large vent is for
the v-berth. The musty smell is now gone. The courtesy lights are also Perko
units and are available in black or white. I chose black. I installed one just
at the bottom of the companionway, one across from the dinette and one in the
head area.
Parts needed: Perko courtesy lights: (3 balck) @ $5.00;
SS mounting screws: (4 each); marine grade wire: 14ga; Switch
Once again, I measured down from the teak trim instead
of up from the floor. A holesaw was used for the mounting hole and screws for
mounting (no sealer). The lights have spade connectors so I bought the spade
crimp-on connectors for 12 ga wire. That way I could wire the lights in a
series, with two 14ga wires in each connector, 14 ga connectors at the head
are light
I have a switch on my 12 panel labeled courtesy
lights. When used underway with the hatch open, the light shade directs
the light down, so it really does not interfere with vision in the cockpit
like the overhead lights do. This allows people to move about down below at
night, and at only 1.5 watts each, they draw little from the battery bank.
