Alternative to Tiller or Pedestal Steering - Rack & Pinion Steering

Submitted by Ben Allen

This setup was part of the boat when I purchased it. It consist of a 1979 Toyota Corolla steering box, and various steel welded to shape. Coming out the lower end of the box, the shaft is welded to a U shaped bracket, which is bolted to the top of the rudder. The support bar has an inverted "V" bar welded to it and is attached to the traveler bar on the transom with SS straps. The wheel is a standard 16" / 6 spoke Destroyer Wheel. With this setup, you do not lose any room in the cockpit area and you don't bang everyone in the knees with the tiller. While you will lose some of the feel of the boat, it handles very easy in heavy wind and seas. (25 - 30 Knots and 6' seas) .
