Installing a Navico TP200CX TillerPilot
Submitted by Gary Norgan
I finally
bought a Navico TP200CX tillerpilot and have really enjoyed how it frees me to move around
my boat and make adjustments (I'm always harnessed when single handing) or to go below to
get a drink or get a sandwich or whatever. Here is what I did to make it happen.
The first photo shows the completed installation, mounted on the
port side of the boat. The first time I used the pilot I had forgot that it was sent to me
with a starboard installation programmed in so it tried to go in the opposite direction
the compass told it to go to maintain course....it really was quite comical for my kids
and wife at the time. Reprogramming it to port side was easy.
This second photo shows the cantilever bracket
installed on the side and how I attached the extension to the tiller. I had to attach it
under the tiller because the tiller has a high arc to it.
Photo 3 shows the bracket I made from a galvanized
shelf bracket. I did some hammering and bending to make it fit right.
Photo 4 shows where I run the cable. I just carefully
stick it between the back corners of the port locker and gas locker lids.
Photo 5 shows how I mounted the connector inside the
gas locker so that when the water starts to fly around the connector is inside and dry.
When I don't need the pilot it can be removed and the cover screwed onto the connector
body.
Photo 6 shows where I located a marine-grade
push-pull switch with all wiring accessed through the port storage locker. I have even
included a connector for interfacing with my Garmin 12XL GPS unit but I haven't had the
time to make the connections and make it work yet. I need some time to do that and my
teaching job keeps me busy. Hope to get to this little detail soon.
