Last minute decision to remove my rudder just before the deep freeze rolled in and also placed my winter/snow cover on the boat as it sits in it's slip. But could not do an adequate job of scraping off the rudder of weed growth and slime. Left the rudder in the cockpit area. Then next day temps dropped and snow dump approximately 8". Many years, I do not have to put my cover on. I only do so if prediction is generally for more than 4" of snow. This winter it is also going to be colder than recent winters and so I noticed they put the flow agitators on in the marina but they are mostly to protect the floating slips and there are many areas where ice will form if the winter is very cold (like this one)....so I decided to remove my rudder.

Since the rudder will have slime etc residue dried on it, as soon as the weather improves a bit, I plan to sand it down to the paint but anticipate I will have to repaint it again with an ablative multiyear paint. I only need a small amount of paint, probably a pint . However, most bottom paints are sold in gallons, some in quarts and very few in pints...and certainly do not want to pay a lot for repainting just the rudder. The best I have seen right now is West Marine selling a red quart believe it was for their CPP ablative paint but the description seems to indicate it is a one season ablative. I would rather go with a multi-year ablative or copolymer paint. Any suggestions for a small quantity for hopefully under ~ $50.

West Marine's CPP ablative paint is an excellent multi-season ablative paint made for West by Pettit. I used it on my boat for many years. The West website says the following: "Out of water storage will not reduce antifouling effectiveness."

The best deal I've seen on multi-season ablative antifouling paint at WM is Pettit Horizons, in black only, for $58.91 for a gallon. I haven't used it and can't vouch for it, but it is made by Pettit. Here's a link. (click on the black color choice.) https://www.westmarine.com/pettit-paint-horizons-multi-season-bottom-paint-P002670925.html?queryID=f0211a46bb95e80c4708bdc9b56b9899&objectID=2670834&indexName=production_na01_westmarine_demandware_net__WestMarine__products__en_US

It does state what you indicated, I just did not see the words multiyear paint ...also it did state something about painting it every season. But since you had good results, I'll reconsider it. The other choice you recommended, Petit Horizon paint - I would go with that, though it costs a bit more. WM has a 15% discount going on so...it's about $50 for it versus $38 for the other. Such decisions !! I'll probably go with one or the other later today....though probably will not be painting for a few weeks or a month or longer waiting for some good days.

By the way.....I bought new Quantum sails. Started the process at the Annapolis Fall Sailboat show and then picked them up sometime later when they were ready. So......they are sitting around right now.

I was also preparing for my whole house to be interior painted...which is now done. Turns out I had another old sail laying around in the basement. Well, I thought it was an old sail but partially unfolding it, it appears to have never been used. I think when I bought my boat in 2005, I found the sail in an original sailboat under the cabin seats and brought it home....and forgot about it. Looking at this sail, I do not see any mfr label but looks original and never used...believe it is a furling rig Genoa...a 135, maybe a 150. When weather is half way decent, I'll spread it out on a tarp on my driveway, lay the sail on it and then my new Quantum 150 Genoa and see what exactly is that old/new condition sail. I will have my old Quantum sails as backup, so I will not need this old/new sail. I'll post a message when I check it out more thoroughly. (When I bought my last set of Quantum sails back around 2006/7, I had my old originals as backups for when I had to bring in the Quantums for inspection/maintenance. But a few years ago, I finally got rid of the old Quantum sails - sent them off shipped free to "Seabags" and then they sent me 2 small Seabag ditty bags in return.)

Turns out that the CPP 1 Quart for $38 is not available. Since there was no experience with the Petit Horizons and the 15% discount would not apply since it was already listed at a clearance cost of ~ $58, I reviewed all paint options again and decided to go with a different brand -Blue Water Copper Shield 45 - 1 quart, blue, ~ $54 clearance price. WM in Alexandria, VA should have it in 3-7 days. Not familiar with this brand but it had equal or slightly more favorable reviews compared to Petit Horizon. Copper Shield 45 has about same copper %, ablative multi-season and compared to the others, it has an anti-slime agent which should be of benefit for Potomac River sailing. In any case, I am just painting the rudder. I will probably save the remainder of the quart in a stop loss bag.
