I was at the Annapolis Sailboat Show and stopped by Quantum Sails to discuss replacing my 2007 Quantum Sails (Main and 150 Genoa). They were able to dig up my old paperwork with all the measurements they recorded from when they took measurements off my boat back in 2007. Ordering basically same sails/sailcloth as last time - Quantum Crosscut Sails out of Challenge Marblehead High Aspect 5.6 sailcloth. Only change I made was on the Furling Genoa - Instead of a UV Sunbrella cover, I am going with a lighter cover material made of Weathermax LT.
Keeping her well dressed! 17 years is pretty good service.

I recall the condition of the original Catalina sails - They were visually intact but the main was significantly stretched/blown out and the 150 Genoa also had significant stretch. The original sails were replaced with Quantum sails in 2007. So, the original sails were 18 years old. My Quantum sails that I am replacing are now 17 years old. The main has a small 2" tear which I placed a small stick-on sail patch a few years ago. Also has some stretch but much less than my original main. My Quantum 150 Genoa also has less stretch compared to the original 150 Genoa but it has some of the Sunbrella UV cover along the foot shredded. I have had to trim some of the sunbrella material off but otherwise the sailcloth along the foot is okay. My Quantum sails have been used a lot, show wear but overall okay.
Given how well the Challenge High Aspect sailcloth held up against significant stretching compared to the original sails, I went again with the Challenge High Aspect sailcloth.
I am going to hold onto the old Quantum sails for several years - Probably will bring in new sails for inspection/warranty reasons and so I can use my old sails at those times. I am just starting a vacation to Australia/ ew Zealand and so I may have limited internet access. My daughter’s family will be babysitting our house. My boat is on independent ops.

Had a great vacation ! Land tour of Sydney, Outback - Uluru, Cairns - GBR & Tropical Rainforest and then Celebrity cruise in New Zealand. Supposedly there are over a million kangaroos in Australia but wherever we went, I asked where are the kangaroos and we kept getting the same answer - "Not Here!". Well. they are not in the populated areas. Others we talked to indicated they saw plenty of kangaroos south of Sydney, etc areas. Interesting that in Australia they have lots of kangaroos, Koalas, camels and a whole bunch of nasty critters, some venomous. (We did not see any nasty critters except for one giant spider crawling up someone's shirt. We did see camels and then in zoos, we saw kangaroos and koalas.) Interestingly, in New Zealand, they have none of the above animals but have birds, deer and what settlers brought over - sheep, goats and cows. Oh! we did not see them but they do have Hobbits and the Shire. Supposedly, the Lord of the Rings was entirely filmed in New Zealand and going in various forest areas and viewing the landscape, it certainly seemed similar to the vegetation and mountainous areas in the movie.
Getting back to sailboat stuff of which I have not seen too much on the Forum recently, my new Quantum Sails came in. I picked them up in Annapolis. Md the other day. Now have to decide if I put them on now (some warmer days next week) or wait till Spring.
Gary, I indicated earlier that I was going to hold onto my old Quantum sails for those times when I have to bring the new sails in for checkups and maintain the warranty. However, I found another old sail tucked away in my basement. Many years ago, I had sent my original sails to Sea Bags in Maine and in return, they sent me 2 of their small Sea Bags made out of recycled sail cloth. I have to check out more thoroughly (pull out the last of my original sails) to see what it is. Believe it is a furling Genoa perhaps 110%. I am not sure how much it was ever used by the original PO and I have had my boat since 2005 and never used it. I'll check it out and let you/others know what it is and it's condition.
Tonight, I took a better look at the extra sail I found in my basement. I believe I found this sail sometime after I bought the boat back in 2005. It was under the cabin seats. I must have decided to take the extra sail home and placed it in the basement. I never fully inspected it. I had a main and a 150 furling Genoa on the boat and I might have just assumed the extra sail was a jib...anyway, I forgot about it. Then I bought new sails a year or two later, never gave the sail in the basement a thought about possibly using it. Now, I just received my new Quantum sails and will be retiring my old ones to the basement.
I could not fully lay out in my basement what appears to be an original furling Genoa. But the dimension along the foot is approximately 16' 3". This sail appears to have never been used!! I mean it is bright white, no contamination. The Sunbrella furling trim strip is bright blue with perfect white threads and there is absolutely no chafing or anything. It looks like it never was used! I was looking for a mfrs label but did not see any. Thought that was a bit strange. Was wondering if original stock sails had a mfrs logo on them or not ? I can tell from the construction, it does not have some of the reinforcement/crosscuts that my Quantum sail has and I do suspect this was part of the originally supplied sails for the boat but for whatever reason was not used.
I think it is either a 135 or 145/150 furling Genoa. I may take it outside and lay it flat on the ground and then place my new Quantum 150 furling Genoa over it and see how the dimensions and design compares.
