This looked like a worth while winter project so I gave it a try. I should mention that I didnt post pics because they look exactley the original pics except for different paint. ( copper VC 17 ). Next winter I hope to upgrade the wheel upgrade that was floating around the site a few years back. Looking forward to putting the skeg to the test !
I am looking forward to reading your comments after you get out sailing.
I thought I'd report back what I experienced after a season of sailing on a lake, with a wheel with my new skeg.
1) The boat points way better than before. I don't want to blame all the pointing issues on the boat but before no matter what combination of sails and reefing I couldn't find one I felt completely comfortable with at stronger winds. 2) Less drift sideways and weather helm 3) A little less tender and doesn't round up quite so easily in strong winds 4) The combination of a skeg and switching from a 135 genoa to a 110 genoa has made the boat a little faster according to Sail GPS. from 5.8 to 6.3 top SOG 5) My main purpose for adding the skeg was to stop the boat from doing a 180 when tacking with just the genoa up and for that it had no effect . Just like the Catalina dealer told me Oh well.
I would do it again in a heartbeat but I would be tempted to make it 8 inches by 6 feet. Or better yet I hope someone else does that and reports back
