Amen Paul... IP reputation is a pretty loose way to block users. Besides a lot of users are from DSL/Cable modem accounts, and those also are the source of a lot of these spoofed emails...
Stopping spam requires everyone to patch/protect their computers... never gonna happen. Its about as possible as it is to get the USPS to not bring you catalogs, or share your address with everyone.
Yes, and a cable/DSL connection is to a nearby ISP hub that can be identified. A forum post comes from that IP, not from an e-mail server. My posts can be tracked to a nearby location in CT. Years ago, we tracked some questionable activities (apparently trying to grind the site to a halt) to a pretty specific location. The question then is whether a larger geography like Nigeria or Africa can be identified.
for the record there is a LOT less BS posters on this board than most others.. I think it's policed quite well. It went away quicker when we could delete inappropriate posts.
Looks like we're under siege--a bunch of nonsense spread across most of our forums by 58 new "users" that registered this morning (so far). Some sites like this don't allow posting until a person has received an email that they must respond to. I can't say how successful that is... How many legitimate new registrations do we get in any period of time?

Dave, Thank you for reporting the spammers. I don't check the forum everyday, so your help is appreciated.
To answer your questions: Yes, our forum sends a registration email. The user cannot complete the registration process without using the link from the email. Yes, I have removed the new spammer posts from today. Yes, I have locked the 58 new users that registered today. Yes, there are several volunteers monitoring the forum so everyone is helping. Yes, our webmaster has implemented a counter-measure which was very effective when installed. Yes, the spammers have changed and we are getting more spammers than we use to.
If you have any ideas how to reduce this number, please send me an email. It doesn't make sense to discuss counter-measures on a public forum where everyone (including the spammers can read it).
Here's an example of the scale of the problem. 287 users locked from Jan-1 to Feb-24 58 users locked on Feb-25 --- 345 total users locked in 2014 17 valid new users in 2014
Does anyone have any idea what they get out of posting unintelligible gibberish on our website? Is it just bored children doing it because they can, or do they gain something from it, such as information that they can misuse?
I understand that becoming a member gives them access to all our email addresses, but why do they post gibberish?
