I've got a 2001 250WB that suffered a broken keel cable last summer during haul out (2nd time keel cable has broke). I've been away the first part of this summer and am just now getting ready to get the boat in the water. I called Catalina Direct to order a replacement keel cable and they said that they no longer carry that part and are sending me a diagram of how to rig a rope cable for the keel instead. Has anyone else experienced this?
John: I just ordered a replacement cable from Catalina. Call Kent at Catalina yachts 1-818-884-7700. He told me that salt water sailors are having more problems than fresh water sailors and they have a replacement that is vectra (or something like that) that they will send you for $25.00. My cable has not broke but I figured it is only a matter of time and this way I would have the replacement in hand.
You can bypass Kent and e-mail Chris Diaz in the parts dept. Chris@catalinayachts.com Give him your name, boat particulars, address, phone number and he will get back to you to set up payment. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the info. I called Catalina parts and ordered the cable. I'm not sure why my cable has broken twice already, the boat is only a 2001 and has been moored in fresh (at least brackish) water only. I did order a new turning ball and some other keel parts from Catalina Direct. I'll install them when I put the new cable on.
The kit Catalina sends out is some Vectra rope and a pulley that goes inside the boat. The pulley the cable runs over is too small for the rope. The cable runs over a ball assembly when it exits the hull and a pulley where it changes direction and goes down to the keep. I replaced mine on the trailer. Just loosened the 4 bolts and pulled the keel out the front. What I did find was that the ball and pulley under the boat was corroded and didn't turn very well. Lots of patience and WD40 fixed that. Let me know how you go about replacing the ball. It looks like you have to cut it out of the hull.
