With the new cabin/cockpit table finished... under the table storage was wanted. Thoughts ranged from a custom drawer cabinet (having liked Oscar's drawer idea) with a fiddled top to checking for easy plastic solutions. While not ruling out a custom cabinet, a fairly good solution was as near as Lowes Home Center for six dollars.
I can't do it... decided the plastic though functional and cheap isn't wanted under the table and there is enough wood left to build under the table storage.
Oscar's drawer design will be replicated with storage tray above.
Rounded staves will be used to avoid sharp corners.
I really like those little locking storage boxes however, and they might have to find a home somewhere...perhaps on a shelf ala one of Ben's ideas.

I can't blame you, Arlyn. You made such a beautiful and functional table, the plastic bins just don't do it justice ... 'kinda' like wearing sneakers with a tuxedo.
I wish I had your furniture building skills ... your table is a beauty! Do you plan to finish it, oil it, or what?
'Glad you reconsidered the plastic bins ... we were all starting to worry about you!
Hey Arlyn, I just wanted to thank you for improving my nomenclature. I never knew what to call those things. This is from American Heritage Dictionary:
fid·dle (f¹d“l) n. 1. Music. a. A violin. b. A member of the violin family. 2. Nautical. A guardrail used on a table during rough weather to prevent things from slipping off.
I'm still plugging away at the under the table tray and drawer.
The box is finished. The drawer frame is glued and the facing fit and glued, with the remainder the sizing and gluing of the drawer bottom. So... its getting close.
While working on the drawer this evening, I set the tray part outside on saw horses to clear the work bench to discover when retrieving it that a frigging bird had deposited some berry coloring into the tray, which the wife thought was quite amusing...

The tray/drawer unit is finished... whew, it was a lot of work.
Here is a pic... it should be noted however that the unit has a fresh coat of oil and the table has only one coat so far and it is well soaked in and dry. They will match color.
