I have a stupid question... what are the red cabin lights used for? Is it for mood lighting ;) or does it have a real purpose?

Draws less current? Nightlight? Keeps bugs away?

Just curious.

Kurt - they are used when night sailing - the red light does not affect your night vision. Very handy gadgets!

Chick-a-pea came with all dual function dome lights. I thought they were standard. But I would like to replace them with brass. The plastic is starting to turn brittle from heat. Every now and them I open the cabin up to find the lens on the cabin sole.

and yes, they *do* work great for "mood lighting". My 5 year old grandson loves to sleep over on the boat in the slip, and he insists on leaving the "red lights" on for a nightlight...!

If you want the best replacements then consider Alpenglow lights which were recently featured in Practical sailor. I recently installed two of them to replace nonworking lights in the Gallery area and they are worth the extra money: http://www.alpenglowlights.com/

I replaced one of my old cracked fixtures with a dual color led version of the tradional light (West Marine). The white is ok for over the head area but it is pretty focused. The power draw is minimal though so I don't fret if the kids forget to turn it off.

I asked this same question to my boat dealer and he said that red lights also attract less mosquitos than the white lights. (He also burns citronella candles too) I will have to test this theory when I camp on Tortuga this summer.

Too me, it feels like I am on a submarine when I use the red lights - I guess I'll get used to it though.

Kurt, let me know how the candles work out...

A few years ago, I tried a Cutters brand mosquito repellent candle and that was a huge mistake inside the boat. The soot from the candle had to be cleaned off all the cabin liner.

I like the mosquito "coils" ... there's no open flame, the smoke doesn't leave a film, and I think they smell pretty good ... they work, too!
