If you use the auto tack function in light air, when the actuator arm bottoms out during the turn, as the new course heading has not been achieved. The unit continues to run the motor. This can cause the worm gear to lock into the actuator arm. You can tell this is happening as the ST1000 will be making all kinds of noise and nothing seems to be happening. After taking mine apart I found that all you need to do is unscrew the actuator arm a few turns to loosen it from the worm gear. The trouble is if you don’t hit stand by or turn the thing off and it continues to run the motor the tiny gear and belts inside of the thing will wear prematurely. As I had only used mine for less then an hour, I called the tech support line for Raymarine. The only thing they offered was a kit for $35 to replace the little gears and belts. This seems to be the case for all of there units that use the worm gear system.
