Okay, so finally got the correct fuel connectors from Honda for my '97 8HP four stroke. It started beautifully. BUT now there's no water coming out of the water outlet. ARRRGGGHHH!!!!! (and yes, I lowered the motor into the water before starting it.)
The outlet hose from the engine block is clear so it seemslike an intake problem. I can't reach the intake screen without getting in the water so that will have to wait until Saturday morning. The motor has been tilted out of the water since the last time I ran it so I don't know why the intake screen would be blocked.
The only thing the manual says is, "Make sure water is coming out. If it isn't, don't run the motor until the condition is fixed." It doesn't mention an impeller, a water pump or anything else.
Sometimes the small diameter hose that carries water up to the "pisser" is clogged and no water comes out even though everything else is okay. At least that's the way it is with OMC products.
Sounds to me liked your impellor shelled itself. I had the identical problem in April with my 2002 Honda. If you remove the screens and look carefully you'll probably find little pieces of your impellor in there.
The fix itself is pretty straight forward. Once I got the correct parts (took FOREVER, problems with local dealers), replacing the the impellor only took about twenty minutes (assuming that your '97 is about he same design as the '02). I'd recommend buying an entire "water pump/impellor rebuild kit" and replace the bolts, impellor, cup and housing all at the same time. I ordered one from Harrison's Equipment (800-752-5883) in California. I could not find one ANYWHERE in the state of Texas. As I recall it was about $35 or so.
If you have any questions on it, let me know. Good luck!
Had this happen before. Found a salt build up in the passage next to the therrmostat. Took the plate off that holds the thermostat and cleaned it out. Worked great.
