I have seen rubber (sometimes red or blue) attachments that appear to mount on the top of winches that are not self tailing . This rubber unit makes them self tailing.

I cant seem to find them in West Marine or Sailnet.

Anyone know anything about them?

Yup, they're called winchers. I bought some at Boaters World a couple years ago. I think West and Boat US carry them, too, but I haven't checked lately. I'm glad I installed them. They are helpful, but not as effective as true self tailing winches.

Here they are -- Winchers

Some folks love how they work and their very low price compared with true self-tailors. Others don't.

When installing them, it's very helpful to soak them in hot, soapy water before sliding them onto the winch tops.

I vote in favor of winchers. They're not really self tailing but they help in some conditions. Mostly I use them as gennoa sheet cleats and for that they work very well.

Different strokes . . . I have a set the PO installed that are now in the bottom drawer in the galley (I have a hard time throwing even the most useless - still usable things away). They are nothing like self-tailers, and didn't find them to be that reliable as jam cleats either.

I agree with David - I had a pair on our old C22 and threw them away after a few weeks - found them worse than useless.

Well Pierre, it's about 50/50 pro & con. Winchers are pretty cheap so you could purchase some and give 'em a try or perhaps someone who doesn't want theirs will send you a set. Good luck & have fun!
