Hello -

The previous owner of my Catalina used some kind of paint to paint the boat name on the hull. Since my wife and I would like to change the name I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good way of getting rid of that paint? Someone once told me to use oven cleaner but I'm not sure if that'll work. I just don't want to scratch the hull.

Thanks!
Joe

If it's been painted on... you have to actually remove the old paint.

Here's my suggestion...

Carefully wet sand the name out with 400 grit 'wet-or-dry' paper then move up to 800 grit... finish out with DuPont 77 rubbing compound then 3M fiberglass refinishing compound. If the paint isn't very thick or durable you may be able to remove it using the rubbing compound/3M compound and some dedicated elbow grease alone. (You might try that first to see what happens).

Davis makes an oxalic-acid based gel 'fiberglass stain remover' that can help get rid of a 'name shadow' that might be left behind. (there's a poster in the dedicated C25 area who has that problem)

Check West Marine or other boating supply store for a fiberglass safe paint stripper. One is Interlux's Interstrip 299E Fiberglass Paint Remover.

Thanks a lot for the comments! I guess I'll try the paint stripper first and if that doesn't work the wet sanding paper.

I used Easy Off oven cleaner on my old painted name. It worked great.
Use it on a warm day but not in direct sunlight. Wash off with a sponge and lots of water. You may need several applications to get it all. You may have residual raised areas where the name was but these can be easily sanded off with wet/dry paper.

Beware that the hull color may change right after the application. Mine turned a yellowish brown that went away when it dried so don't panic if this happens to you.
