I want to find more info concerning the in/outs of Port Charlotte Harbor as a possible location to sail, buy some property or use as winter destination.
Anybody out there know the area? I'd like to discuss via email
My wife and I sailed there in December in a chartered Island Packet 31. We think it is a beautiful area. Have you sailed there yet? Many beautiful islands and Charlotte Harbor is big and not crowded. I was surprised that the average depth is fairly shallow ... approx 12 - 15 feet.
I have not sailed the Gulf Coast, but am interested in it as a winter getaway..I live in Wisconsin and sail Lake Michigan...
I am considering locations to keep a boat to sail all year. Did you by chance get an idea of the local folks or a feel for the area..are they friendly, is it a snow bird hangout? Lots a slips available? Expensive??
Charlotte harbor is a really nice area, but as for property it has went through the roof in the last five years. Five years ago you could buy a 2300 sq. ft. house for around $189K in Burnt Store which is on the harbor. Last year the same house was $325K. It is great to sail and the ICW leads to some great Islands and State Parks. You are correct about snow birds. My son cannot wait until Easter, when they all start back home. He now lives in Ft. Myers, but previously lived in a small town south of Venice. Probably the best info would come from Suzie, of "Tropical Sleigh" fame. She lives in Sarasota. You might send her and EM and ask your questions. Good luck looking, the buy is out there, you just have to find it.
Charlotte Harbor is a large body of water running from Boca Grande pass Eastward up to the towns of Charlotte Harbor on the North side and Punta Gorda on the South side. Punta Gorda Isles is a dockside community with hundreds of houses each with their docks, even some apartment condos with docks attached. We have friends there with an Albin 27 and it takes them 45 minutes to get out into open water as all the canals are idle speed. Proximity to the main entrance is a factor of price. Houszes were reasonable five to ten years ago, now are leaping up in price amazingly, what was a 150-160's house would be way over 200. The harbor itself is a fine place to sail and has some interesting places to visit, particularly around Pine Island, Captiva Island, etc. There is a large golf/boating complex about in the middle of the South side of the harbor, called Burnt Store; this has a restaurant, slips, and a variety of condominium residences. My understanding is that it's a pretty expensive place to keep a boat, but I suppose all things are relative. I am retired on a fixed income from a State community college, so my idea of luxury masy be your idea of penury. If I can be of any information, be glad to chat off line. Just as a note, the Venice Sailing Squadron, of which I have been a Board menber, is holding its "annual change of watch" ceremonys at Burnt Store as we speak, every Memorial day weekend event, probably a dozen or more boats visiting, and other folks by car, Fair Winds, ron srsk Orion #2343 Venice, FL
325K for a 2300sft house? Around my middle-class neighborhood you're talking over 600K Of course, the boat is 6 miles away, the open ocean is only 11 minutes once you're underway.
Hi folks, This is an interesting discussion for me in that I have been thinking of looking at potential retirement sites/sailing venues. As an interesting, at least to me, sidebar to this is that my first BS degree was from U of Fla in 73 in Building Construction. I was offered a job with Punta Gorda Isles as the assistant to the head of construction operations. I didn't take the job. As a perk you could buy property at 10% discount and have it built cheaper. My office would have been overlooking the marina.

Went sailing yesterday with a pal from two canals down in Venice. At the end of the canal was the rubbish from a derelict house, now destroyed. "What did that go for?" my wife asked. "One million six" was the reply. This is for the LOT. Prime lot, opening on the intercoastal, maybe 3/4 mile from Venice inlet. AND needs new bulkheading, pilings, etc. God help us all! You're not kidding Ron! Forget Sarasota Inter Coastal water for no cheaper than 1.4 million for lot. Condos Vary depending on view, but good views on bays or intercoastal with sailboat water are about 400,000 and up (way up!) Canal homes with "sailboat water" are now 650,000 (goes higher daily) and up. I can't share any real estate info south of the Venice area, but hear wonderful things about Port Charlotte harbor and its beauty. I plan on crusing down there and south to Captiva in July, looking foward to the trip Good Luck!
