There's an interesting article (I found it linked over on cruisenet) about retrofitting a 10HP diesel saildrive unit into a "Daimio 700" (which looks to be about 7 meters long... similar to our C25's.)
Thanks for such a cool link. Leon has a brother! I read this link and if ever there was a soul mate I this this dude is it. It looks to me like it would not work for a swinger but It probably would for wings and fins. I wonder what the Catalina diesel is? Anyone know? Stephen? I know the Catalina diesel is not a sail drive but I have often wondered why.
Cool....on a side note, if you look carefully at the profile view of the boat, you will notice the "wishbone" mast raising/lowering system mounted on the foredeck of the boat. There was some discussion on this earlier on this forum.
The first C25 I looked at when my wife and I were shopping was an 82 SK/SR, which had a saildrive and a swing keel. At first glance, it looked like it might not be a bad thing, especially since it was local to me, but the engine was an OMC, 1977-ish, and after considerable research, I determined that if the thing ever quit on me, getting parts could/would be very difficult. I even priced a new saildrive as a worst-case scenario kind of thing, and only found one that was around $6,000.00, not installed. So I decided to pass. Also, the boat's name, "Miss Teak", sounded too much like "Mistake" to me.
So I ended up with "Adventurous" that I had to drive 900 miles round trip to pick up. But I'm not complaining, Adventurous is a much better boat. I think "Miss Teak" is still for sale, if anyone is interested. $7,000.00 with trailer in Columbus, Ohio.

The Catalina 25's with factory-installed inboard diesel use a Universal/Kubota 9 or 11 hp 2-cylinder engine driving a conventional prop shaft through a reduction gear box. This system is less expensive than a saildrive, both for initial purchase and repair or replacement, which is probably why the factory doesn't use saildrives. On the plus side, I think the saildrive has a smaller "footprint" and takes up less space, a strong selling point for smaller boats. Personally, I still prefer a 4-stroke outboard for the Catalina 25. It is only $2500 compared to $7000+ for the inboard diesel, takes up no space inside the boat, the exhaust doesn't stink, no smelly diesel fuel aroma inside the cabin, and far simpler maintenance requirements. Plus, if something does go wrong with an outboard engine, you don't have to take the whole boat to the repair shop, or pay through the nose to have a mechanic come to your boat.

A friend of mine has a saildrive unit on his S2 and this past summer his impeller wheel gave out. Normally this wouldn't be much of an issue with an outboard, but for him, this required scheduling and paying for the boat to be hauled to replace the impeller.
In my sailing area seaweed is somewhat of an issue and at times I can't clean the prop by simply revving in forward/reverse. This means I have to lean over the transom to unfoul the prop. This isn't easily done with a saildrive unit.
