I've been wondering about the IACA and am curious about their membership. Who is eligible to join? Is there anyway that we can be in contact with c-25/250 owners who are members of the IACA?
I visited a couple of their web sites, of the fleets, and saw some active programming being promoted - the kinds of things that are benificial to their members.
Thanks for the background information. It's interesting and I would have to concur with the officer's decisions. What I'm wondering about are the c25/250 members of All Catalina Associations who are not members of the c25/250 National Association. It seems that All Catalina Associations are located in areas where we might wish to organize a fleet, and c25/250 members would be an asset for our beginning fleets.
Not for the IA Catalina A. I did a search for it all that I found were sites for several fleets, and the address listed in Mainsheet didn't work for me. So, I'm sorry, Oscar, I don't have an addrss for IACA.
I visited the IACA site, and it appears to be a sort of clearinghouse for all types and sizes of Catalina yachts. It provides links to Catalina Associations for the 22, 25, 27, 30, etc., and it encourages subscriptions to the Mainsheet, but, as far as I could tell, it doesn't seem to have any function of its own.
Actually, I was mistaken in my earlier post. The site I was on was the Mainsheet website. I did some more searching and found the above website, which appears to have been inactive for a couple of years.
Arlyn has really got his facts in line. When we were presented with the option to join the IACA, our Association Officers looked carefully at the proposal from about as many angles as possible. Ultimately, the decision was to remain on our own. The potential benefits of membership simply did not outweigh the costs.
The site Steve points to... was pushed a few years back in hopes to pull all the various National Associations into one all Catalina association. Strong independent associations like the C22 and the C25/250 said... No Thanks. The leaderships team at the time discussed in detail the request to consider and rejected taking it to the memberships as a whole. I can't recall now, but their plans were to assess each member I think it was 5 dollars.
This All Catalina Association was pushed by a few of the large boat groups who had a poor or no national association. While it probably has some merits, we felt at the time that,
the C25/250 association was fairly healthy as is
the control in the new association would probably be done by those larger boat owners who had pushed for it
the larger groups such as the C30, C22, and C25/250 would possilby be the financial bearers of this new association, but have reduced autonomy and class focus
part of our concern was the result of the larger boats some of which had few national association members, getting into a skirmish with the C22 association over Mainsheet space. The larger boats ascerted their right to equal space even though they had far fewer boats... which left the C22 National Association pulling out of Mainsheet. Though I think it is represented again, I'm not sure who is doing that, independents or the C22 National Association... any one know?
Since the effort to form and bring all associations together didn't fly... there have been a couple of commercial sites that sport Catalina forums such as Catalina Owners.com which is owned by sailboatowners.com, the group that took over the TSBB.
From Steve's link,
Investigate expansion of the catalina-alliance.org website to meets the needs of the associations and members, and make it easier for the associations to move their sites to SailNet.
This was one of the reasons we opted not to consider it... we felt we all ready had a great web site. Several of the questions in the survey recently discussed had to do with that issue... Bill Holcomb can better give more detail than I did or provide corrections to my failing memory.
When I started this thread I was thinking about membership, and wondering if there c25/250 sailors who were members of an IACA fleet, and not a member of our association. I think we have a great association, but am wondering about members and new fleets, especially in areas that have an IACA fleet, like San Diego.
