If I may be so bold (why not, you have been so far ), the Vision of the Association, as stated in the constitution and quoted below, appears to satisfactorily address the holistic interests and issues of the entire Class. [quote] II. OBJECTIVES: A. The purpose of the Catalina 25/250 National Association shall be to promote the enjoyment of sailing, cruising and racing by establishing and maintaining design standards and specifications in order to ensure competition between boats of identical design and performance in all essential areas such as hull lines, weights and sail plan. B. Promoting design class racing under uniform rules and regulations which will test the skills of the skipper and crew. C. Promoting a program of family cruising and social activities so that members may enjoy the good fellowship associated with sailing a Catalina 25/250 sloop. D. Keeping the cost of acquisition and up-keep of the Catalina 25/250 sloop within modest limits, without sacrificing high standards of performance and seaworthiness. E. Cooperating with other yachting organizations and, in turn to assist on the observance and compliance with the rules and regulations of the Catalina 25/250 National Association.
However, a Mission statement might be developed that more accurately identifies the divisions of interest (i.e., social, cruising, racing, Nationals, Regionals, Fleets, Mainsheet, TellTale, forum, tips, etc.) and how the Association, in general, develops and supports each of those interests and activities, as we've been discussing. This would probably help alleviate two areas of possible frustration: 1) 2 of 5 Vision statements are racer-oriented, and 2) the natural likelihood that if race-oriented Officers are elected the Association will have a race focus for the year, and if cruising-oriented Officers are elected the Association will have a cruising focus for the a year. [And if Arlyn is elected, we will be discussing Trailor Sailor all year. Which actually just might satisfy the majority.]
Furthermore, each year a Tactical statement might be developed that specifies what the Association, the Officers in particular, intend to do in an effort to develop and support those activities. As well as, work to maintain and expand the membership base.
Sounds like a regular full-time job.
If a particular leadership team provides a certain focus for a given year... that wouldn't be bad. It would as Cliff pointed out in some clarification, be a reaction to some need that hadn't been addressed. Hopefully over the years, the various needs would find their way to the forefront according to the amount of squeak of the wheel.
From the past... we had an ongoing situation where racing was being financially subsidized by the association to the point of an impending significant membership fee increase. That brought a reaction, probably because for the first time... other members beyond racing interest were communicating with each other.
Interestingly, the hoped for result of adding a forum to the association activity which was viewed by the then leadership as a way to increase membership to provide racing funds, was the bullet that mortally wounded the shooter. The wheel squeaked quite loud toward remembering the articles you pointed out.
As to officers doing the right thing... I served almost three years as Vice Commodore... who by constitutional definition is responsible to promote a National Regatta. Even though my interest area is cruising, I did the right thing and solicited nationals bids, presented those offerings to the leadership team, and appointed a Race Chairperson who handled the events. Could I have done more? Sure, I could have attended. But, to do so would have meant expending my vacation funds for three days of something I wasn't into, in trade for two weeks of something I loved to do. Not a good trade.
All officers will struggle to balance their interest area against the good of the association... it can't be helped. However, I believe that most volunteers will do the right thing and not inflict serious harm on the association. There are some checks for that now in place. The new amendment to the constitution that changed it from a single person rule to that of a leadership team was in fact at my request... It will simply make it harder to have dues jump by 75% to serve one special interest area.
Hi there, Being a new member, and new sailor, I am just appreciative of anyone who serves the association. In a former life I was into whitewater kaying big time, as a cruiser, racer, teacher, and some of the same discussions already posed (racing vs, cruising)would come up in the governance of the club which I was very active with. There was always a pull on the limited resources we had. As a racer, we had fundraisers, from which we would contribute to the US team, or buy stuff to put the race on. The cruisers didn't have many needs out of the treasury. Most of us spent big bucks mostly on having a good time and going places, either to races, or paddling (cruising), or some other adventure. The Atlanta Whitewater Club had a mission statement which was (is) also the club motto. (I no longer live in Atlanta) I'm sure they wouldn't mind us using it
CRUISING, RACING, GOOD TIMES
We even put that on our banners, business cards, stationary, ads. Very effective, and it truly came from the heart.
