I had the privalege today to fill in for our vice commodore for sail at our annual PHRF commitee Meeting. The two yacht clubs on our lake send 3 representatives each to the meeting. The process and results were fun to be a part of. But when the Committee considered the PHRF rating for the 250WK and the 250WB...there were just a handfull of yacht clubs reporting PHRF in the US Sailing guide. The number in no way represents the number of 250's produced and sailing. The very best way to learn to sail is to race IMHO. You learn: 1. Proper sail trim 2. Rules of the Road 3. How to Manuver in close Quarters 4. Headings, Bearings, favored sides of the course 5. Learning from good and not so good decisions 6. Team work 7. Lots More I encourage all the 250 owners to register for the the next race in your area. Set reasonable goals and take small steps, It is great fun and your learning curve will go straight up. We have a great boat and the numbers should reflect its stength, Steve Steakley
We don't have a Sailing Association on our lake. But the local college The University of Southern Colorado has a Sailing Association. They had a regatta April 26th and 27th. They gave as PHRF rating of 237. 7 races in 2 days. I would like to do that 2 or 3 times a summer.
Sounds great. . . suppose there's no chance of a getting a race together on Canyon on a Wednesday, eh? Thus, the problems of having to work weekends. However, for a fine, quiet cruise. . . I've got it licked! We were out last week on a Thursday: for three hours, not a single other boat was spied. Literally had the whole lake to ourselves. Maybe someday, when my seniority at work allows, I'll make it to one of the Saturday regattas! I'll be more than happy to let you and/or Derek teach me a few (if not more) things.
On the other hand, about an hour ago, my copilot and I just got off of a Capri 22 here in San Diego where we spent a GREAT afternoon of sailing in near perfect conditions! We actually could have rented a C250WK at the same marina, but I couldn't justify the extra $20/hour for the rental. . .

Wednesday afternoons may be a possiblity for me. Buzz may be interested in joining a 25/250 run. Beware. . . you'd have a total racing novice on your hands . . . (speaking of myself).

I know. . . I know. . . I'm weak and unworthy. . . and I'm not trying to make another excuse, however, I already have a committment for Wednesday evening. We are still in school through this coming week (we homeschool) and Wednesday is a combination end-of-school/my mother-in-law's birthday/Spurs game bar-b-que at our house. The admiral has not seen fit to hand over a lake pass for that afternoon. However, I am hoping to maybe (emphasis on 'maybe') make it out there for an hour or two that morning.
The stakes of the 'race' certainly are right up my alley! I definitely want to come out and play!

Hey guys! I like the stakes...now, when we decide to do this, please put a date with it - not just say "next wednesday" - I'm very easily confused I'll be single-handing so you won't have to buy beer for my crew... Derek
I'll try to be around this Wednesday, but I can't commit yet.
BTW, I just got my outboard fixed and remounted on the transom ... woo hoo! I haven't been able to sail for almost three months because of the mess I got into with that outboard ... keep your fingers crossed that it keeps working.
Now I've got to learn how to sail all over again ...
Buzz: Glad to hear your outboard situation is finally resolved!
Derek: I hope when you say you'll be 'single-handing' that means with one had tied behind your back. . . then maybe we'll have a chance!
Steve: I took it to mean this coming Wednesday, the 4th. That is the date I'm already committed too.
Happy sails. . .

Bren... Shhhh... If the air is light (under 5) and you want to surprize these guys...get a couple of hefty rail meat types lined up...pump out the water ballast and sail her like a dinghy.
OK, I sent you guys an email...it went like this: Warning: This is not a club sponsored event, No one is Responsible! OK, This originated when Bren who owns the 250WB said he was unable to participate in club races etc since he worked on weekends and sailed during the week, mostly on Wednesday's....So we are getting together this summer for Wed afternoon fun runs which are not sanctioned by anybody so anyone can join, even power boaters...but they will be disqualified from the winnings if they use their engine. MY suggestion is that the last boat in buys the beer. All we need to do is set a start time, this Wed the the 4th is the 1st in a long series that may go on forever. Please reply to the group if you are interested and please spread the word..we could get lots of participation if they know it is just for fun and they might get some free beer! Bren..what would be a good start time for you?. We could meet breifly just to determine the course and use the front of the Marina as a start line, Ready, set go! Steve
Buzz, if for any reason your boat is not ready just join me or whoever, just be there!
