Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to clean cabin cushions? I have a 1986 Catalina 25. I have heard that if you take the cushions out of the covers it can be a beast getting them back in. And some have buttons going all the way through. Help? Thanks Dan
I don’t have the original ‘80s style vintage cushions aboard, the PO replaced them in the early 2000s with automotive custom cushions. Extra thick cushions, zippered sunbrella fabric. I started out cleaning them with a spray-on rug cleaner, Resolve. You spray it on, then you vacuum it off. I found that this works very well for most stains but there were still a few tough spots that wouldn’t come out. Given that the pieces had zippers I was able to remove the innards and wash and scrub the skins in a bucket of detergent, bleach and water. If mine had buttons, I wouldn’t have had that choice. Many people have simply tossed and replaced their original cushions. This can be quite costly, as they must be custom-made. If Resolve doesn’t do what you want, a solvent like naphtha or acetone and a stiff brush may work. Try it on an inconspicuous area first.
