And they're off! Second group set off today at 11. Here a really cool tracker.

Also, the Bermuda One-Two race is under way. My friend, Dave Tabor, is racing his CS 36' Merlin (Dianthus) in it. The first leg is singlehanded, from Newport to Bermuda, and the second leg is doublehanded from Bermuda back to Newport. His crew on the return trip will be another friend, Dan Lawrence. Both are outstanding racers. You can follow the race here. Dave appears to be doing well at this stage.

I race my boat in the Annapolis Beer Cans every Friday evening, and crew for a friend every Wednesday evening. The next weekend race for my boat will be the Shearwater Sailing Club Twilight Race, on Saturday, June 20th. Wanna race?

My friend is looking for some young, strong crew to help race his Jenneau 45. He has a boatload of old guys like me, but he needs a couple young guys who have more stamina. We were talking last Wednesday, and he indicated that he's thinking about racing it in the Governor's Cup and/or the Race to Solomons. The boat is exceptionally fast, he races it non-spin, and it has the potential to win it's class. If you could sail with him in a few Wednesday night races, to get familiar with the boat and equipment, it would be a great opportunity to participate on a competitive boat in one of the premier events on the Bay.

Tell me when you can be there, and I'll let him know. The boat is at Maryland Yacht Club, 1500 Fairview Beach Rd.
Pasadena, MD 21122. The boat leaves the dock at 6:00 pm.

Its a 30 min. ride without traffic from my work. I'm off at 4:30 so I could bring some clothes to change into and be there around 5:15. Is this week in the mix? I don't see the boat on the entry list, but AYC probably hasn't updated.

Actually, that photo looks like a CS 36 Merlin rather than a Jeanneau 45. Is that correct?

Right. The boat I mentioned in this thread is a CS 36 Merlin. It's presently doing 7.9 kts in the Atlantic, about a day from Bermuda. The Jeanneau 45 is in the Maryland Yacht Club Marina on Rock Creek.

Dave and "Dianthus" just finished fifth in Class 3, and 9th in line honors.

Yeah, there's nothing more refreshing than an ice cold beer after a long race! I hope they can also get some sleep before they start the race back!

I just saw this brief summary of the Bermuda One-Two on sailnet.

"Out of the pack of 27 boats, two turned back, one with battery issues and one with a broken rudder. Another boat with one of his two rudders broken went on to finish. One broken goose neck. One lost main sail and two lost spinnakers. And one with a head injury, but went on to finish.

They had 10 to 15 foot seas and 40 kts winds crossing the gulf stream."

That must have kept those singlehanders busy!

Holy crap. Thats why those single-handed distance races are scary. I feel like you need two people just as a safety precaution. Good for all that powered through to finish.

Here's an email from Dave to his racing friends:

Well after getting blown to death for days I finished this morning in light air under spinnaker just beating out another boat over the last 20 miles. 5th in class but considering the level of experience I guess its not too bad for a first offshore solo. Wait, did I say first? Implication being there will be more. Am I freaking nuts?
And yes it blew 25 + for some time. Waves built to 10-12 consistently with the occasional 15 footer, one of which sent me surfing at 16 knots! Double handed leg starts next Thursday so the non spin fleet will have to do w/o us. See you in late July!

You did a good job, and Skipper liked your work. I expect you'll be a regular. The power of those big boats is pretty awesome, eh?

Yeah, good boat handling, good trim and speed, and no mistakes. What speeds were you seeing during your turn at the wheel? Skipper reported over 8 kts. My friend and I hit 8 kts last Friday on my C&C, entering the West River. He's still grinning about it!

Steve -- for the young stamina tap into the University of Maryland sailing team and the St Mary's sailing team -- both have excellent sailors with kids who are around during the summer. Maryland sails out of Annapolis.

The Univ. of Maryland sailing club keeps their boats only about 1/4 mile from the marina where I keep my Cal 25. Do you know if they have an online service where they match crew with boats that need crew?

I have used the Spinsheet crew listing service, and have had good and bad results. Some folks just want a boat ride, but don't want to commit to crew in a full season of races.

St. Marys also has skilled young sailors, but it's almost a 2 hour drive to Annapolis, on a good day.

You might be able to ask them: Marylandsailing@gmail.com (I can't say whether they're monitoring it over the summer.)
