My motor mount plates were bent so I ordered the improved ones on CD. After taking the old ones out the mount springs released a bit. After replacing the old plates with the new ones the slots don't line up with the pins that adjust the motor.
I called Support and he told me to release the tension on the springs. The springs are too strong to this. Has anyone attempted this upgrade? There must me a way to release some tension to get the pin and slots to line up. It's a two spring motor mount that is probably the original...
It shouldn't be that hard to release the spring, It wasn't for me. I just put a screwdriver between the spring and the tube where it hooks onto the tube and pried it off. Used the screwdriver to put it on again. You have to do this with the mount in the fully up position. There is less tension on the spring when it is up.

Thanks!! I got the springs to release and put it all back together. It was like a powerful mouse trap when it released... Now all I have to do is load the spring...
Thats what were here for...I should have told you about the Mouse Trap effect. I also removed the hinge bolts while the springs were off and cleaned out the tubes and re-greased the bolts. That made a big difference in how smooth the mount works. Much easier to raise and lower. Someday i'll bite the bullet and get a four springer.

Is it appropriate to mount a heavier 4-stroke outboard on a two-spring mount? Is there a structural difference between a a two-spring and a four-spring mount, or is it simply an improved aid in lifting the motor?
Somewhere along the timeline they improved the side plates on all of the mounts. George was replacing his older less beefy plates with the newer versions. My two springer is an 87 so it already had the improved plates. Yes you can mount a 4 stroke on the 2 spring mount as long as it has the beefier plates. The problem is that having only 2 springs to assist you in lifting the heavier motor makes it more difficult. I have a Honda 9.9 sitting on mine and it could use the extra springs of a 4 springer. All of the mounts now are identical structurally, The only difference is how many springs they have.

Thanks, Scott. Very interesting subject, although I'm not certain if my mount has the improved plates or not. How can you tell? Here is a picture of my mount.
Looks like your mount has the beefed up plates, The replacement plates are of double thickness in the critical areas where the positioning slots are located. If you look along the edge of the plates there will be two layers sandwiched together. I believe the original mounts only had the single layer and would bend.
