I have two related questions. As I was ordering some items from Catalina Direct I noticed that for some items (e.g. cockpit cushions) CD noted that you should order part # x for '87 and older and part # y for 88 and newer, and further specified the hull #s for the dividing line. Question # 1 - what are the differences from 88 on? Question # 2 has to deal with the hull #s. The CD listing for the seat cushions indicated that 87 went thru hull # 5802 and 88 started with 5803. My boat's full hull #, CTYK 5801D 888, indicates it is an 88 model however it is close to the very end of the range CD specifies as 87. So - is my boat an 88 model (manufactured in 88) but has specs of the 87 boats or is CD off on their hull numbers?

Their numbers seem correct - though I am a tad puzzled why seat cushions would change on the 88 model as the big change came with a new deck design in 1989. Perhaps there was some crossover near the end of that model year. Might be wise to check with CD on the phone prior to ordering. There's a guy named Kent that was an engineer for Catalina Yachts that now works at CD - I suggest you speak with him.

Wow, if what you say above is correct, then they produced darn few boats for the 1988 model year (see my hull number below). Perhaps they moved up the release of the new deck design introduced with the 1989 model, cutting the 1988 model year short.

Is the leading edge of your forward-most main salon port lite angled? if so, that is the later deck design.

Our owners list suggests the change from the '87 to the '88 model was at about #5700, and to '89 at close to #5800. Your HIN indicates your hull came out of the mold in April (D) of '88 as an '88 model, which seems a little early for the mold change, but it could have happened before the model year change...

I would talk to CD about it.

My boat has the slanted window so I guess the deck is the "newer" version. I am the 2nd owner. The first owner bought the boat the spring of '89 I believe.

The newer deck also had a smoked acrylic forward hatch. They also enlarged the anchor locker drain and moved the exit point closer to the waterline.

Hmmm, would be fun to know (well, sort of) the first hull number that received the newer deck design.

As referenced above, leading edge of forward main salon port lites are slanted

Yup - just like mine. So - the new deck goes back to at least 5801. Who has 5800?

Note that about 360 owners of the over 6000 C-25s built have posted on this forum in the past year. Others are probably "lurking," but don't hold your breath.

We ordered a set of cockpit cushions from Catalina Direct and they were shipped from C Cushions Inc, 206 Highway 35 South, Rockport, TX 78382,
Phone 361-729-1260. Our boat is a 1988 Sail # 5737. Cushions are marked C-25 pre 1987.

They fit perfectly.

I'm not sure what the "official" cockpit cushions cost but I happened on quite a deal a few years back:
A "Boater's World" store was going out of business and I found two pair of Igloo cooler seat-tops for a medium and large cooler. $25 each, so for $100 I purchased two 42" x 14" weatherproof cushions and two 30" x 12" cushions. They neatly fill the entire length of each cockpit seat. I also have multiple individual cushions and two West Marine portable "Go Anywhere" stadium seats. Totally comfortable.

Looking at C Cushions website they make some really nice cushions and accessories. They've been in business a long time

C25 cushions are $671.00 direct from C Cushions which is interestingly the same price CD charges. Odd they wouldn't mark them up for handling the transaction.

And they are not very far down the coast from Houston!

The Ebay cushions look nice but they will absorb water so keep that in the back of your mind when shopping if it's important to you.

Personally that wouldn't matter to me because if it looks like it's going to rain they would be below anyway.

After years of standing my vinyl cushions on end after a rain, I'll only go with closed cell foam.

The link you provided for the cockpit cushions, that design, etc seems very similar to what I saw by another company at the Annapolis Boat Show - They were there every year I went to the show. I forget the name of the company but a search on the web, you will probably find them since there is only a couple of mfrs that offer them. I recall they had a price sheet that listed all the boat models.

The cushions were closed cell, thinner and lighter than the original cockpit cushions that came with our boats. But the closed cell cushions were also a lot denser and did not collapse fully as the old non-closed cell cushions. My concern was if the cushions, being that they are lighter than existing cushions, if the wind could cause them to lift and come off the seat. But they explained to me that it just turns out that the closed cell cushions seem to sort of partially adhere to the seats and that prevents them from lifting off. I have no proof of that but that's what they told me...and they apparently have been in business for quite some time. The mfr at the show also had individual seat cushions and a sort of molded one with a small seat back that they also sell. Sorry I do not recall the name of the company but probably would not take long to find them if you search in Yahoo or Google. It would be something to compare against the mfr via the EBay link you provided.

From your description C Cushions was the company you spoke with. If you go to their website it says basically what you said. AND they do attend the Annapolis Boat Show.

Dave, I guess I pulled the link from your posting but it originated up further in the posting thread.

I believe there were two mfrs at the boat show and now that I am home, I was able to check them out on the web. Yep - One was CCushions. The other was bottomsliders. But...they are pricey for covering the wentire cockpit with the two large cushions - Both mfrs selling their two cushions for over $600 !

I know I was tempted to replace the cushions...but at over $600....I'm putting that decision on the backburner.

Check with some of your local body shops or browse your Yellow Pages for who does auto re-upholstering. I bet they would do it for a lot less than $600. Side note: I traded with another C-22 sailor for a set of cockpit seat cushions. When I took the foam out to wash the covers, I noticed that both pieces were about 6" longer than the covers. Apparently, putting the covers back on compresses the foam adding stiffness to the cushions.

We have been looking into getting new cushions for JD but with a modified design.

I wondered if the full length port & stbd cockpit seat cushions would be better if split where the cockpit locker lids lift.

Right now, with our original full length cushions, we have to remove them to open the lockers or at least stand them on their outboard edge, either way it's a pain.

If the cushions were in two parts cut athwartships just forward of the edge of the locker lid, it would make opening the lockers a whole lot easier.

At least, that's IMOH.

I was just browsing the forum and saw you guys looking for some cheap cushions. Well, I was also looking last week and started by searching for closed cell foam. I came across this company which sells white and colored foam:

If you chose to get the 48"x72", 2" thick, it should be enough to cover both sides. And look at all the colors it comes in. All for a bargain price of $132 shipped!

I emailed the company to inquire about the colors and the use. They say it will definitely work for cushions, and doubles as a flotation device. The color however, they say will fade over time. I planned to get blue and if it fades, then I'll cover it. If you store it away, then it shouldn't fade that badly.

Of course, if you want to cover them, then go buy a few yards of sunbrella for not much more and have a nice set for half what others are charging. ;)
