We bought the boat and made it home. Hull 1151. The rudder will definitely have to be replaced, the bottom is in bad need of paint, the engine is a 10 hp yanmar diesel. It seems to start and runs good but clatters at idle, hope this turns out to be normal. The trailer is an EZ Loader in need of paint and master cylinder (maybe the rest of the brakes, not sure yet). What concerns me most, is a crack in the cabin ceiling. It is in the very aft starboard side of the cabin. It is about 8 inches long running crosswise. It is bad enough that you can see into the plywood core. Now assuming that no crack is good, has anyone ever seen anything like this? Is this crack a mortal injury and how would it have developed? And if it can be fixed, how can it be fixed? I will try to post some pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Congrats!! Most diesels, particularly with small numbers of cylinders, will "clatter" at idle, but should smooth out at working RPMs. But that crack--that's in a strange place. Seeing the plywood says it's not cosmetic--the outer laminations are completely broken, which is rare on these boats. Obviously, rain water can penetrate it and deteriorate the core. A photo will probably help us advise. See our Testing Forum for how to post photos.
The crack is in the overhead, not outside on the cabin top? Is it a pop top? A photo would definitely be good. If the crack is inside the cabin, take a photo of that area on the outside too.
Oops--sorry--I missed the word "ceiling" (implying inside the cabin). The inner liner is not that critical, but it's still curious. Is it in or near the pop-top (if you have one)?
