My experience is the "inexpensive" ones are broken. People rarely give them up when they work... Defender has a good regular price on the ST1000+, under 4 bills.

If you plan on using the tiller pilot connected to a chartplotter/GPS or even your wind speed/direction instruments, then you may want to do some research. The Simrad or Raymarine communications may not be compatible with your devices. I've got my Raymarine tiller pilot talking to my Garmin chartplotter. All I have to do is lay out some waypoints to my destination and tell it to go.
