Joel, You should get a number of replies from the WB folks, but I think most of us (WB & WK) are using an XL (25") shaft, especially if we're on more open water (I'm on Puget Sound & want the extra 5", the shaft on our Tohatsu is actually 27-1/2"). If you're on a lake, you're probably fine with a 20" shaft.
20 inch is fine until one encounters steep short wave action going up or downwind, straight or at angles or even in tidal disturbances. When you have to depend on the outboard in windy conditions a 20 shaft on the stern of a C250 may not be your first choice...
In foul weather dousing and firing the engine in sync with the waves is tiring and no fun at all plus under those conditions there are most likely increased skipper demands
The WB and WK boats vary in their water line with the WB riding lower. I used a LS for several years on a WB and had little difficulty with it except sometimes on Great Lakes chop. If on a small lake, the LS is very suitable but if sailing more aggressive waters, the XLS is the better choice.
The above advice pertains to the WB only, the wing keel will generally need the XLS.
