I agree, how do you not notice the boat beginning to bounce off the bottom (even when asleep) when waves go under the boat and not get the heck out of the situation? It's not like the tide instantly goes out.
If I ever get in the situation of starting to go aground I'd try to alert my neighbors if I thought they were going to go aground also.
Read about the helicopter crash. Sounds like mechanical failure (at least one rotor blade came off, if not both) from eyewitness accounts. Pilot was a long time American Airlines pilot who just celebrated his 60th birthday on Thanksgiving Day. Sooo sad!
