I need to replace the forward hatch lens on my '89 and I'm wondering if anyone can give me some hints on how I can easily remove the lens from the frame?
I replaced mine this summer. I removed the hinges from the boat frame and took it into my shop. I then cleaned out the adhesive and pulled the plastic out. I replaced it with lexan the same thickness. I used the removed one for a pattern to cut and drill the new one.. If I had it to do over I would use Plexiglas and a little thicker & darker. The added thickness would cause the edges to be beveled, however if someone stood on it it would not have cracked, as it did when a guest on board did. If I hadn't previously removed the entire frame to reseal I would do so when replacing the plastic. Getting the screws out was a problem as I had to drill two of them out.. I used masking tape on the plastic and frame to keep the new adhesive from getting on it when installing the new one, I used black silicone adhesive similar to what is used on car windshields. A wet finger in a latex glove will smooth out the silicone nicely.
Larry -- My hatch is a Bomar from what I can tell from looking at CD's website(haven't looked while at the boat).
Howard - Is it possible to just tap the pins out that hold the hinge together? What did you use to remove the adhesive and how long did it take you to get the old lens out? I'm going to try and get it out, take it to the glass company, have a new piece cut and installed, and get it re-installed in one day. Hopefully!
Gary - you have a C-25, as opposed to a 250, right?
Which hatch lens are you talking about? I did the deadlight for the Vee berth a couple seasons ago and documented it on the Iris blog. Not sure if the photos are still there though. I'll go check. Yup - pics are gone, but writeup is there... http://littleboatiris.blogspot.ca/2010_07_01_archive.html
If you are talking about some other hatch, like maybe the one for the head, forget this post.

The hatch hinge on mine was screwed in and the screws were corroded some and very difficult to get out. (had to drill out a couple) If I were you I would remove the frame from the boat. It would be a good time to reseal it while in the process. I covered the boat with a tarp while I had the hatch out. If you do not want to remove the entire hatch you might try soaking the screws with some penetrating oil for a couple of days to help the removal. I did not do that and I should of. You can dig out the adhesive around the plastic with a knife and I think I also used a small chisel.
