I don't know anything about the 32, but I looked closely at a 25+ when buying my Catalina 25. Had the E-25+ been in better shape (it had major deck core issues) I'd very likely to be sailing it instead of the Catalina.
Chris, great boat. Check the Admiralty Forum, one of our skippers bought one. If it has an M25 engine, we have tons of engine information on our C34 website: http://www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Diesel_Engine I'd be glad to help if you have any questions.
The M25 and M25XP are essentially the same engine, one is 21 hp the XP is 23 hp, with a bigger 3 inch HX and the "corrected" alternator bracket. The engines are very reliable and easy to maintain. With all the Tips & Tricks on our website, you shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel.

I hope the following link will work for you. If you put a checkmark by each of the prospective boat's options, you should eventually get a value. http://www.nadaguides.com/Boats/1985/Ericson-Yachts/ERICSON-32-SL/10065999
That's a really nice looking boat....and I'm even digging the purple cushions. If she surveys out...seems like a solid cruiser. As far as price/value....I have no idea what those boats go for....but in the 32' range, an '85....seems like a fair price for the condition. Surveyor should tell you a fair market value.
While I'm NOT digging the purple so much it might grow on me and I wouldn't let it stand in the way. It looks like a good price for a really nice boat to me! Go for the survey!
Check the Signet gauges.... The bottom one looks fried. Replacement for each is $400+ and trying to cover the holes with something else is a pain. Just something to think about.
Ericson makes a nice boat. I found it interesting that the numbers for the 32' Ericson are very similar to the numbers for my C320...which is for sale in the "Swap Meet" thread:
The displacement difference is also massive, and the sail area on the C-320 is higher to compensate (although it still has a lower SA/D).
I liked the Ericson 25+ that I looked at when buying my C-25. The exact boat that I looked at wasn't great and needed a ton of work, but the quality, features, and design were nice. They seemed to me to be a bit better made than a Catalina, at least in this size range.
Didn't mean to get you guys all fired up...just pointing out some similarities. Stu...your math is WAAAAY off, if you do the numbers, the differences in LWL and beam are a shade over 9%. Re the ballast...4400 is for the C320 wing keel, the fin is 4000, thus bracketing the Ericson. The C320 is about 15% heavier.
