This coming week and over next weekend, classic boats will be coming to the CT shores starting in Niantic and heading over to New London and Groton. Tall ships of every stripe will be there, including USCG and military boats. OpSail runs concurrently with SailFest, the annual Independence Day event. They expect 1MM visitors over the entire event with awesome fireworks on Sat 7-July over the Thames River.
See www.opsail2012ct.com for details. They're setting up remote parking with shuttle buses and special train service in and out. Anybody who's nearby should make a point not to miss the boats or the celebrations.

Bruce - I was considering crossing over from Orient Point this upcoming week, this is a great incentive. Can you suggest any marinas where I might get a transient slip?
Thanks!
Jerry

If you sail to Old Saybrook, your can get a slip at Brewers or the Marina between the Bridges, then take the train up to New London. Westbrook's Pilot Point marina is awesome and you can also take the train from Westbrook Station. The marina runs a shuttle to the station. Same with Branford's Bruce & Johnson marina.
If you're dead set on sailing to New London, last month's Windcheck Magazine has a 5-6 page writeup on New London's Thames River facilities.

Here's all you'd ever need to know about New London harbor and the lower Thames River - watch out for the huge submarines tho, they get the right of way (per the guy behind the cannon on the Coast Guard patrol boat)!

The New London train station, BTW, is right on the river by the ferry docks and walking distance to Fort Trumbull on the river. Amtrak stops there, and Shoreline East runs trains to/from that station out of New Haven, connecting with Metro North from NYC (often on the same train)--considerably cheaper than Amtrak. There are ferries to New London from Orient Point, L.I.

Bruce covered the marinas to the west... There are quite a few in the Mystic River to the east: Noank Shipyard (closest), Noank Village Marina, Mystic Shipyard, Brewer's Mystic, and others. There's a free anchorage above the two bridges, just barely beyond the Mystic Seaport, but that's a bit of a trip (with bridge schedules)--figure 45 minutes from Fisher's Island Sound. (I go through there all the time.)

Wish I were going to be there for the events, but it doesn't look like it.

Good info on the Mystic marinas, but I wasn't sure whether there was a train station within walking distance in Mystic itself. Taxicabs should be an alternative. Thanks also for the Shoreline East train schedule for Metro North (aka New Haven RR). The Orient Point ferry is a good alternative for our friends in Long Island.

The train station in Mystic is within a short walking distance of Brewers Marina and downtown. I guess you could dock in Mystic and catch Amtrak to/from New London--it's $14 each way, and there are only a few trains every day. Most Amtrak trains zoom through Mystic without stopping.
