Just asking if anyone else on the east coast has received a mailing from a group titled: SeaPlan (seaplan.org)?
They contacted me about a survey of recreational boaters in the NE (neboatersurvey.org). I did not solicit them, so I'm naturally curious how they knew to contact me.
Jerry I checked the website and seems to look legit. I have a contact at the CT Marine Trades Assn (as opposed to MA), and will send her a note. The matter of how they got your email or interest in boating? If you google yourself or your email name you will find this or another online forum, BoatUS (if you're a member), West Marine ID, boating dealers, attendance at boat shows - whatever. As you are aware, we are tracked by advertisers every time we do anything online or where we provide our personal info.
Jerry I checked with the CT Marine Trades Assn. Here's what I received:
LinkedIn Amy Lynn Clark has sent you a message. Date: 6/25/2012 Subject: Re: NE Boater Survey org Hi there - yes it is very legit, honest & much needed info should the marine industry have to fight legislation again. CMTA is involved with this survey, I as a boater received one as well. I believe the information was obtained through registration information.
If your friend has any questions, please feel free to share my contact information.
-------------------- Dear Amy Lynn, I hope all is well with you. Looking forward to OpSail coming up soon.
I have a question maybe you could advise me about.
A friend in Long Island received a questionnaire in his email about boating in the Northeast. It looked very legitimate and he checked the website - seems Massachusetts Marine Trades Assn takes part as a sponsoring organization.
His only question was how did they find him and ID him as a boater? I suggested he may have signed up for an affiliated boat show (NE show in Boston), is a BoatUS member or put his email on a boating chat board.
Can you shed any light on this? I understand that whatever you do and say on the Internet you should be willing to print in the newspaper, and I appreciate people who seek me out for my views on boating, but some folks are uncomfortable about it. I'd like to let him know that it's really pretty benign. I appreciate your comments Regards Bruce Ross
Amy Lynn wrote me back and suggested that I and everybody I know should go onto the website and fill in the questionnaire. Please see www.seaplan.org She said that they, in association with other states' Marine Trades Assns, have reversed a number of unfavorable legislation against recreational boating and boaters. In CT they were able to reduce the "luxury tax" on boats, for example, and have provided "best practices" with respect to improved handling of bottom paint scrapings.
