looking for some answers again and what better place to find them than here. I have an 04 WK 250. The spreader boots fell off, literally... due to uv damage. No biggie I am thinking, but then a guy at the marina told me I need those to keep the main stays on the spreaders. I don't see how they can come off during sailing, being tight and in the groove in the spreader, and I didn't think the boots were there to keep the stays on them, but rather to protect the sail.
So! Safe to sail without spreader boots? Can the stays come lose? I guess if they do, the mast would damage or break.
Thanks.

I replaced mine last year. I got them from West Marine. I'm sure others make them. Get the type that are for your foil-shaped spreaders, not the type for tubular spreaders. You might be able to wrap with rigging tape instead.

The spreaders should be attached to the uppers by seizing wire. All the boots do is prevent chafe. If you have a 110, you may not even need them, since the sail is not long enough to come in contact with the spreader tips. But you'd have to be careful not to let your main out too much when running.

We don't have spreader boots on our WK, we have shroud rollers instead. As Rick pointed out, you really don't need boots if you sail with just your 110 jib (we almost always do, and if we do change, it's to our storm jib which is even smaller).

We have the same setup as David. We have a 135. No need for boots.

I see. This is what I thought. I only use a 110 so for me this is not an issue.
What does this mean exactly: "The spreaders should be attached to the uppers by seizing wire."
Where could I see a pic of this wiring? From deck, it appears there is nothing there, but maybe I just don't know what I am looking for. She was last rigged down and back up by a professional rigger, so I assume all is done right, but stranger things have happened...
Rick, would you know the PN for the West Marine boots you are referring to? If yes, would you kindly provide so I can order online. (I live in Canada. Flintstone country. No west marine here... )
Thanks for all the great replies!

I also have the shroud rollers, installed by the PO, they work well with my 150.
