I don't Facebook anymore. I used to and realized I really didn't wnat to know that much about the day to day of everybody I know. I had a relative that felt the need to broadcast nearly everything she did through the day!

Wasn't this disussed once before? I'm a little concerned that the content and quality of this forum will migrate and a valuable resource will be lost.

I find myself using FB more for keeping in touch with old friends and family than I do with close friends. I post only occasionally, and have learned to just un-friend those who feel it's necessary to post their latest bowel movement, religious quote, political rhetoric, etc. and little else. I have more tolerance for people who I truly like when they post stuff like that (I've got a brother who posts constantly about religion and politics, which I just ignore), but they also post about their lives, which is interesting to me. If I didn't have an FB account, I don't know that I'd miss it much, but I'd also never have read about things that have happened to my shipmates from the USN, friends who have moved across the country or world, or a lot of family news and stories that came out of a recent death of one of my aunts.

I can see how the C-25 FB page might cut into some of the forum traffic, largely because it's so simple to post photos on FB, and somewhat of a pain on here. Wasn't there a push a while back to allow picture hosting on the site? However, we've had a Catalina 25 FB page open for at least a couple of years, and I don't think we got more than a dozen posts to it in that time, so I don't think there's much to worry about. I don't even remember who started it, but I do remember he was trying to hand over the reigns a few months back. I don't know if this is the same page, or a new page.

I can understand DavyJ's perspective, and I had the same basic attitude before I reluctantly joined in 2008. Since then, much like David, I use FB to keep in touch with family and friends (I come from a BIG family, and it's a great way to keep in touch with everyone). I'm on it almost every day, and many days I'm on it a few times a day. I find it a great way to have unstructured conversations about a variety of topics. But it's a HORRIBLE way of actually getting information that you want to REMEMBER, or for searching archives to pull out information from others. To me, the Facebook page is yet another way to connect with other owners (should you want to) and to promote the existance of this site. However, I don't think Facebook, especially in its current incarnation, could replace this forum. The intent is very different.sd

Since we don't have photo sharing here, I do see David's point about picture sharing on FB. Have we considered creating a C25/250/Capri photo repository somewhere? Perhaps on Flickr, Photobucket, Snapfish, or any of the many other sites that are out there (obviously not Apple's, given that they are about to shut down). That would avoid the need for the Association to host the pictures, while at the same time allowing for a more consistent, and persistent, place for the pictures to be stored.

Sorry if this is a highjack, and I'm happy to take the picture part offline or to another thread, if that helps.

I use FaceBook as do most of my friends and family.

The key is to use the security and restricting features the site offers. I may have alot of friends, but I only subscribe to a chosen few so I only see their posts in my newsfeed. I also restrict my content to members of certain lists. Only select folks get to see my whole profile. 95% of everyone only sees very, very limited content, little more than the general public.

I do not check in. Anywhere. Ever. I don't post every little thing I do. In fact, I "might" make a post a week. I respond to alot of posts though.

Facebook can be a great social media tool if you use it right and take advantage of the various ways it can be configured.

Nice cartoon Davey, and so true.

Like Joe, I've got lots of restrictions locked down on FB. I also rarely post, but I read a lot of my friend's & family's posts. I also weed people out fairly frequently. I've got friends and family who have thousands and thousands of "friends". One of my nieces, about to graduate college, has over 5k "friends" on FB. Her little sister has about 1/10th of that, but they're entirely different personalities. I think I've got about 120-130 or so, probably 1/4 family the rest friends.

I use facebook and see no problem with it. It allows you to more easily keep track of people you've known/know. You simply use it as much or as little as you like, you know, kind of like a TELEPHONE. And as far as taking away from the Association, that's what some folks thought about this web site a few years ago, but it has made it stronger. I don't think facebook will affect this at all.

Can't stand fazebook. Don't trust Zuckerberg. I use it but I don't like the format. It would take a full time job to keep up with the constant changes that are being implemented.

I want to thank everyone and the people that brought this forum together. I can't tell you how much more I have enjoyed sailing through this exchange.

I've used facebbook for years and it is still annoying. ( Didn't you read my post )

Please.....

I use facebook to keep (ok, occasional) in touch with friends and family.

However, the moment they post about how much cow manure they have collected on Farmville, or other app, I put them on my 'Sorry dude, tis time to hide you' list.

Facebook is a way that info you are interested in finds you, but it's also a way for stuff you have absolutely no interest, nadda, and that's when I add them to 'the' list.
