Hi guys - New member of the forum here with '82 C25 swing keel project. I've done quite a bit of work already and am about to finish up. I hope to launch her in the middle of April.
Here is a parts list I'm still looking for: (Standard Rig) Mainsail 150 hank on Genoa Masthead with pulleys Spreader plugs(shroud guides) & covers Boom Vang with brackets for boom & mast Tiller Bimini & sunbrella cover (or bimini parts - have main hoop) Cockpit cushions
Thanks for any help & advice, I do have the CatalinaDirect guide.
In the tech tips, I think there is an illustration of a boom vang (two blocks, a cleat and line... If it is not there I can scan it and sent to you as an attachment via email. Just let me know
I would suggest you be patient and you can find a good used Genny for a fair price, do a search for used sails. Doug
Thanks for the link Doug - exactly the parts I was looking for - just ordered them! In the Forums PDF parts file is CatalinaDirects original boom vang with the mounts for boom & mast included. I've got a "lesser" boom vang from my 21ft 1970 Cal-Jenson (which is now a duck-pond float- long story) that could be made to work, but now that I have a real boat I'll stick with Catalina parts when I can. My Cat never had a boom vang (no mounts on boom or mast for it). How any of its former skippers ever got good performance out of the boat I can't understand. My Cat is an '82 model #3136 with swing keel which has been retrofitted with new bushing, pin, & cable. I've got a 110 Jib thats in good shape but would like the 150 for lesser winds. There certainly are plenty of used sails out there - some as pricey as new almost. The search continues!
On Friday I called my local West Marine and asked if they would honor Defender's price on bottom paint? They said YES, so I went down and got the lowest price I could find with no shipping charge. My local WM said if I wanted to order anything they didn't have, they would order it with their regular order and I could pick it up at the store with no shipping as well. I am liking this! Doug
Hi Guys - I'm down here at a family reunion in Clearwater, Fla and have my list of major & minor parts I'm looking for - lo and behold! 1. Turns out they have a Catalina factory here in Largo (next to Clearwater)and they are having a BIG sale, to make room for everything from their other factory in California which is closing down. I will be stopping by there!! 2. Turns out they have a sailboat salvage yard here in Clearwater - 6 acres of boats with barrels of turnbuckles, cleats, etc.etc, hmmm, I wonder how many junked Catalinas they have? I will be stopping by there!! 3. Turns out there are a dozen West Marine stores here and one SUPER store in St.Petersburg. Very pricey compared to new stuff on ebay, but for the things I can't find anywhere else - I will be stopping there!!
Sam001 - I hope to find a 150 Genoa in the couple hundred dollar range in as good as condition as I can get it. :) I was told that that the Cat factory has a stack of new sails for app.50% off (which would put a Jenny in the $500 range??) I'll be over there tomorrow to find out.
I'll let you guys know how I do when I get back North at the end of this week.
Quite the trip this past week and I wound up with most of my list completed.
1. Donsmarinesalvage.com in Clearwater was everything a boat junkyard should be. I went thru several baskets of turnbuckles until I matched up the one I brought with me (side stay) in the "hardware" trailer/container. Next I was directed to the "sailboat" warehouse and browsed thru 4 shelves of mastheads until I found an identical match to the broken front tabbed one I brought with me (somebody dropped my mast in its previous life). Next I was directed to an alleyway which had at least 40 biminis - some with canvas, most without. All of which were too big for my C25. I saw some very rough tillers - no boomvangs, when I went to pay for my turnbuckle & masthead the old man looked at the masthead and said "Cat 22, right?" "Nope" says I, "but samething - C25". Total cost both parts - $50
2.Next stop, the Catalina factory, about 2 miles away. WOW!.................. They are now making all Cats there from 10ft to 50ft. They have a workforce of over 200. I headed to the factory store. Much confusion there as they are just starting to get things sorted out. The parts manager, ken@catalinayachts.com, told me that CatalinaDirect was not them - a totally different company that buys most/many of their parts from them. We can purchase most of these parts cheaper from Catalina, than from CatalinaDirect! Alas no sails were on "sale" and Ken asked me to email him a list of what I needed and he would get back to me with prices - I am still looking for the full boom vang kit & mounts (saw a couple of beautiful ones for larger boats). They give tours thru the factory on Wednesday afternoons (I was there on tuesday - rats!)
3. Next was the West Marine "superstore". There I got my mast polish, gelcoat refinser, sail tape, grey deckpaint, new pirate flag (a must have), rubber spreader covers, but alas no battens or fiberglass material to cut them to length. For those I was directed to JSI in south St Petersburg.
4. newjsi.com - WOW!........... what a place - pure sailboat supplystore for, canvas, cushions, spars, rigging, hardware, sails, bimini frames - most everything made right there! I asked for batten material and was directed back to a huge sail making room. There were 20 -25 people with 5 or 6 sails laid out on the floor, being cut & sewn. Two were cutting & bending new bimini frames to size (there are my 2 hoops I'm looking for & new sunbrella cover too). They gave me 3, 4-5 ft pieces of batten material - cost $13
All in all, had a great trip, saw family and old friends, but I'm still looking for that 150 Jenny and boom vang & mounts. The weather is sure getting warm - time to launch Freya II, soon I hope!
