We have two boys, a 3 year old and an (almost) 6 year old. They are good kids and listen fairly well. They are learning that they can't be on deck without a life jacket, especially when underway. However, kids are kids, and I'd like to build in a little extra margin for safety. So, I'd like to install lifeline netting. I've read a lot of pro's and con's, and I'm not trying to start another thread along those lines. We have no intent of actually RELYING on the netting, but it will make us (espcially my wife) more comfortable. I've seen Seamar's listing, and there's a sports company that also makes netting that would be good, and the only thing that has held me back is not knowing the height of the lifeline. Does anyone know how high the lifelines are above the deck? Seamar makes 18" and 24", and I'm not sure which one is right. My legs suggest that it's the 18", but I'm not 100% sure. Can comeone confirm?
Jim, Lifeline netting is not a bad idea but may not do all the things that you might hope it to do. You are on the correct track about teaching the kids about the dos and don't of sailing. However you should not only be tell them but also demonstrate for them the neccessity of life jackets by you and your wife wearing a life jacket ALL THE TIME and not just when you go on deck. Buy comfortable ones and it will become second nature which is what it needs to be. Even with a life jacket on, it could still be traumatic if one of the little guys fell off. So in this case you can do what is done for adults - attach a tether. This way if the little guys get away and even get through the netting you essentially have a leash. No need buy a whole harness and everything like you would for an adult for rough weather. Sailing with kids is such a wonderful thing and I am so happy to hear that you are doing this. It is so rewarding for kids and it will be a learned skill that they will take with them throughout their life. You're already ahlf way over the solution; you have recognized the problem and are taking steps to guard against it. That's a leg up on a lot of people.
Hey Jim, This forum has given me so much and when I logged on today I felt somewhat guilty because I haven't paid my dues for a while. So to ease my guilt I have a set of netting that came with our C-25 and if you e-mail me an address I will just stuff it into a USPS flat rate box and send it to you.
It will fit in a medium flat rate box and that is about 11 bucks if your interested.I will just send it and if it will work you can Pay Pal me $11.00, if not, well it is out of my shed.It was on our Catalina 25 when we got it in 2004. We took if off and washed it but my wife didn't want to put it back on. Any way its your if you want it, just send an address and I will get it in the Mail.
