Hello All, Recently moved the boat down to the amazing Marina Del Rey. I have been working getting her back in shape and ran into some trouble with the ST60. It has always been finicky to say the least but it never mattered when we were just using in on lakes. Basically when we power up the ST60 it reads some insanely high number 650 Kts or 540 kts(changes over time). The boat is obviously in the slip and not moving when this happens. However, once the boat gets going the speed is pretty close to the GPS speed. But after about 5 mins the speed gradually climbs to 4 kts above the actual speed then continues to climb until it reads something like 20 kts. I have never really seen this before. So I have done the following:
1. Reset the CB , check the wiring on the circuit breaker panel 2. Removed the spin wheel and cleaned it(seemed to be spinning freely and easily) 3. Tried to calibrate it. Oddly enough if the speed reads higher on the main page(say 40 kts) and you go the calibrate page it reads the correct speed. What in the world does this mean?? 4. I have been meaning to get at the wiring to the actual unit but it is in a very precarious place. I have it on the starboard side of the cockpit. The precious owner drilled 2 mounting holes on the inside of the cabin. If I try to unscrew the mounting brackets I might lose the screws in-between the two fiberglass walls.
*This symptom may not help but as best I can tell the depth meter is working. It seem to be spotty and stay on the same depth for a long long time but is some what accurate. There are times though that it is dead wrong and has not updated the readings.
Thoughts anyone on what this might be? I am thinking electrical but not sure.
Hum... are you sure you dont have the unit in the Demo mode? My Navman Multi 100 has this and then you can read strange numbers ;-)
Well I think that you have problem with the cable or the sensing head. There is an HAL sensor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor) and on the wheel there is an permanent magnet. It basicly works on the priciple of counting the revolutions. If it counts something then the display is probably ok, but I would try to disconnect the cable from the sensing head to see if you will have steady number 0 kts.
We have the ST40, however, our experience with technical issues with the Raymarine equipment Tech support has been outstanding. So I would give them a call.
